Home of the Brave

Every time someone says America, I instantly think of the men and women that served and continue to serve our country. Without them, there would be no such thing as freedom in the United States. Our country is very fortunate to have citizens so devoted to their country, that they risk their lives every day just to make sure the rest of us can live our lives to the fullest.

Without freedom, and men and women to fight for it, I would be afraid to go to school everyday and do the little things that I take for granted. Just think about it for a second, what if there was no freedom? What if everyday we lived in fear of something bad happening? But I don’t have to worry about that because of the brave veterans and soldiers who protect our rights. That’s why when I see an active soldier in uniform, I thank them for all their hard work that they put in for me.

My grandfather, Raymond, was a World War II veteran. Unfortunately, he died in 2002 when I was a baby so I didn’t get to hear any stories from him personally. Just the way everyone lights up when they talk about him gives me the reason to show respect for everyone who has been in combat. I only have one picture with my hero but that picture is worth a thousand words to me.

If I could, I would shake every veteran’s hand saying thank you for all the time you put into saving our country. Thank you for risking your life for the little things I take for granted. Thank you for being so brave.

Hallie, eighth grade
